Rancho Not So Grande: A History

In 1984, Sam’s grandparents Paola and Giuseppe Bagnatori, and great aunt and uncle Elena and Jack Brittain, purchased a former pear farm in a rural corner of Sonoma. Having grown up in the Tuscan countryside, Giuseppe in particular loved having a place to plant the fruits and vegetables that reminded him of his childhood, and imparted that love onto the next generations. The family soon began affectionately calling the place “Rancho Not So Grande,” a reference to the popular mariachi song “Allá En El Rancho Grande.”

In August of 1986, Sam’s parents Lisa and Andy married there surrounded by friends and family. Since then, Rancho Not So Grande has been the setting of countless long summer days and happy memories for the family.

Thirty four years later, in July of 2020, Sam invited Lauren to join him for a weekend at Rancho Not So Grande, just three weeks after their first date. We bonded over our mutual love of food, friends, and family, and not too long after, Sam confessed he’d always dreamed of getting married under the big oak tree.

Since then, Rancho Not So Grande has borne witness to many gatherings of our friends and family, including Soomi and Henry. Lauren celebrated her 32nd birthday there. It is a special place with history and meaning for both of us and it is our pleasure to welcome you all.
